Conventional VHF Telemetry Receivers

Introduction

Telonics VHF telemetry receivers are specifically designed for use with conventional VHF transmitters. These receivers have a very narrow bandwidth coupled with a very fine tuning capability, extremely low noise front end, a broad dynamic range of signal reception, and specialized gain control that allows the user to reduce the signal levels so that a bearing can be established when using a directional antenna. This combination of specialized features is not found in commercial receivers used in other radio applications. Off the shelf or modified commercial receivers lack a number of important characteristics, including the sensitivity required to track the very low power transmitters used in VHF telemetry applications.

Telonics has manufactured conventional VHF radio telemetry receivers since the late 1960's. The first production model was the TR-1-10 receiver. Early "channelized" TR-1 receivers lead to the development of the first fully synthesized TR-2 receiver and the companion TS-1 scanner. This combination became the standard for radio tracking applications around the world and is still in use today. Although we continue to support repair of the TR-2 and TS-1 with available components, obsolescence of some components forced the cessation of new production in 1994.

The following table provides a selection of the current models of Telonics telemetry receivers currently available for use in the field. The tracking receivers include, the TR-4, a low cost programmable field receiver and the TR-5 designed for aircraft and data acquisition applications. In addition to the tracking receivers, the TVR-1 is small low cost test receiver. Also described is the TNR-3000 DSP noise reduction system designed for use with VHF telemetry receivers operating in high noise environments.
